Operation Details
'Byng Boys' was a British intelligence-gathering undertaking in preparation for 'Cordite' (March/April 1941).
,Allocated by General Sir Archibald Wavell, the commander-in-chief, Middle East, to Lieutenant Colonel Dudley W. Clarke, heading the theatre’s deception apparatus, the operation was created to generate intelligence information about Rhodes. 'Byng Boys' was based on the secret establishment of a Turkish-manned post on a rocky crag on the mainland of neutral Turkey, from which Rhodes could be kept under surveillance from a distance of 16 miles (26 km) by means of a high-power telescope borrowed from the Royal Air Force.
