Operation Details
The 'Hagen-Bewegung' was the German withdrawal of the forces of Generalfeldmarschall Günther von Kluge’s Heeresgruppe 'Mitte', in the aftermath of the Soviet 'Kutuzov' offensive, from the salient round Orel to the 'Hagen-Stellung' defence line to the east of Bryansk (1/16 August 1943).
,The 'Hagen-Bewegung' was only grudgingly approved by Adolf Hitler at the urging of von Kluge once the failure of 'Zitadelle' had become fully apparent, and reflected the need of the hard-hit German forces to shorten their front and thereby make men available to shore up formations and units facing major Soviet assaults.
