'Martello' was a British deception plan, designed by Colonel Dudley W. Clarke’s Force 'A' Force as a subsidiary of 'Bertram' and associated with 'Murrayfield', to use of dummy equipment and 'Sunshields' to conceal the movement of Lieutenant General H. Lumsden’s British X Corps in the period when Lieutenant General B. L. Montgomery’s British 8^th Army was readying itself for the 'Lightfoot' initial phase of the 2^nd Battle of El Alamein (October 1942).
