Operation Details
The 'Prinz Eugen-Stellung' was a German switch line in the primary defence position along a 250-mile (400-km) sector of the Eastern Front for Generalfeldmarschall Walter Model’s (from 16 August 1944 Generaloberst Josef Harpe’s) Heeresgruppe 'Nordukraine' between the Dniestr and Pripyet rivers (summer 1944).
,The line extended parallel with but to the east of the line of the Bug river between a point to the south-west of Kovel in the north and to the west of Tarnopol in the south, and was designed for the use of General Walter Nehring’s 4th Panzerarmee in the north and Generaloberst Erhard Raus’s 1st Panzerarmee in the south. The Soviet 'Lwów-Sandomierz Offensive Operation' overran the position without difficulty after achieving an initial two penetrations on 16 July.
