Urbane

'Urbane' was a series of British carrierborne air attacks on shipping targets off the north-west coast of German-occupied Norway by elements of Admiral Sir Henry Moore’s Home Fleet as a diversion during the RA.62 convoy operation (6/9 December 1944).

Under the command of Vice Admiral F. H. G. Dalrymple-Hamilton, the British force was centred on the fleet carrier Implacable and the escort carriers Premier and Trumpeter, which were escorted and supported by the light anti-aircraft cruiser Diadem and the destroyers Savage, Serapis, Vigilant, Zambesi, Zealous, Canadian Algonquin and Sioux, and Free Norwegian Stord.

On 7 December 12 Grumman Avenger bombers of No. 856 Squadron from Premier, escorted by 14 Grumman Wildcat fighters of No. 881 Squadron from Trumpeter, laid mines in the Salhusstrommen. On 8 December 12 Fairey Firefly warplanes of the FAA’s No. 1771 Squadron from Implacable, escorted by nine Wildcat fighters of the FAA’s No. 881 Squadron, sank two merchant ships off Stavanger.
