'Verbrannte Erde' (ii) was a German policy enunciated by Adolf Hitler in his Führerweisung Nr 71 to order that the German forces, when retreating, must evacuate or destroy anything that could be of use to the advancing Western Allied and/or Soviet forces (19 March 1945).
